Campus Galli

A journey back to an age with no machines or electricity

More than 1200 years ago, monks on the island of Reichenau drew up the ground plan of an ideal monastery. Besides a large church, the draft also included artisans' housing, stables, gardens and everything else that was necessary to make the monastery self-sufficient and independent. For many centuries this plan lay dormant in the library archive of the Abbey of St. Gall. Today the world-famous St. Gall Monastery Plan is becoming reality near Messkirch.

It will take several decades to complete all the buildings of the monastery complex. In the meantime, visitors have the opportunity to watch the artisans at their daily work, and even join in if they wish. On the marketplace a wide selection of food and drink invites you to linger, and while you're enjoying a tasty monastery sausage, for example, you can watch the carpenters close up as they rough-hew the beams.

We warmly invite you to visit the monastery construction site! Immerse yourself in the fascinating atmosphere of Early Medieval times and let yourself be captivated by our unique construction project!
